In Praise of a Moonbat Free Society-Circa 1945

When Franklin Roosevelt called the nation to prayer in 1945 there were no Ted Ralls, Michael Moores, Barry Lynns, Freedom from Religion Foundations,ACLUs, Maureen Dowds and other moonbats to draw childish cartoons,create "Subversodramas", flagellate the president, file lawsuits, squall, screech and raise holy Ned in general.

Americans listened, prayed, put partisan politics aside and worked together to win the war-one of the last in which this country could claim a clear victory.

Why do you think that was?

See the sentence above, starting with the words-"there were no..."

FDR's 1945 battle prayer request to the nation:

"Last night, when I spoke with you about the fall of Rome, I knew at that moment that troops of the United States and our Allies were crossing the Channel in another and greater operation. It has come to pass with success thus far.

"And so, in this poignant hour, I ask you to join with me in prayer: Almighty God: our sons, pride of our Nation, this day have set upon a mighty endeavor, a struggle to preserve our Republic, our religion, and our civilization, and to set free a suffering humanity. Lead them straight and true; give strength to their arms, stoutness to their hearts, steadfastness in their faith.

They will need Thy blessings. Their road will be long and hard. For the enemy is strong. He may hurl back our forces. Success may not come with rushing speed, but we shall return again and again; and we know that by Thy grace, and by the righteousness of our cause, our sons will triumph."

Read Roosevelt's prayer carefully, printed and broadcast to the nation some 50 years ago.

What do you think the moonbat response would be if George Bush called for such a "National Day of Prayer" today?

Dear Bedrock........while working on my Ph.D. at a crimson land grant university nearby, there was time well spent in the Abattoir . This experience was for money , not pleasure, but I quickly learned that to control the creatures therein, an accurately swung sledge-hammer to the forehead not only startled and stunned the "moon-eyed", it made their subsequent slaughter easier on the both of us........lots of red , of course,. immediately followed.....Do you detect anything familiar?

I do. And to be honest with you,I almost followed through with the "abattoir" theme in my postings and responses. I realized however that I would be inviting a
"Wing Nut Abattoir" blog(may anyway)and the whole thing could get rather bloody.

To its credit,one compelling feature of your approach
is that it doesn't leave any room for recounts :)

Healthy physically and fiscally perhaps; mentally is another question :)

And in 1945 the moonbats hadn't taken control of the Democratic Party either-witness Roosevelt's speech.

Neither were much of a force until that wonderful "Dawning of Aquarias", Woodstock, toodling off to Canada and squatting in college administrators' offices period of the 60's.

And it's been downhill for this country ever since.

Hey bedrock,

Care to expand on some of the other things going on in this country circa 1945, 1950 or so? How about white America's belief that "blacks" were not the same as whites, didn't deserve the same rights and priveleges as whites, etc. There have been good things and bad things to come from each generation whether you care to admit it or not.

In the 1950s, the civil rights movement was going strong as a result of actions by these so-called "moonbats" you speak of. But of course, they were just ridiculous people, not in their right mind, right? You fail to realize that most of us who lean to the left are not extremists like Michael Moore and others. For the most part, we embrace equality. FOR ALL PEOPLE! Not just the ones that happen to agree with our policies, like the President.

You also happen to list FDR's prayer. However, you fail to list a religion associated. Is it a Christian prayer, thereby discriminating against Hindus, Buddhists, etc? Oh that's right, those are not the "TRUE" religion. Why is it so hard for right-wingers to understand that America is a melting pot of peoples, cultures, religions, etc.? It is by no means FAIR to discriminate (by virtue of legislation or otherwise) against others who happen to view things or worship differently than you do. So if you want to continue to uphold the "values" of the '40s and '50s go right ahead. But don't lambast me when I call you a racist or a bigot or what-not.

I'm not sure what "whatnot" means, Bulldog, but my black friends will disagree with your charge that I am a racist and my very liberal daughter, brother in law and best friend and just about everyone else who knows me would disagree with your claim that I'm a bigot.

I agree with you that a lot of good things have happened in the past few decades. In those days, black people and other minorities suffered from segregation in schools, public and private facilities which was certainly wrong. Women didn't the rights in employment and salary levels that they have today and, except for Babe Zaharias, no one would dream of having a woman compete with men on the golf course as Anika Sorenstam did recently. Advances in medicine have pretty much wiped out deaths from diseases like pneumonia that killed my mother in her early 30's and there's no question that even the poorest among us have luxuries that only the privileged few could even dream of having in those days.

All of those are good changes in our society for sure.

And, yes, I do tend to focus on the good things that took place in that era, which is the wont of old timers in their reminiscences.

I also realize that not all liberals are extremists like Moore and I celebrate the ones who aren't. But the ones who are-the left wing radicals-are the focus of my blog.

That you would call Roosevelt's speech "discriminatory" illustrates the problem we have with
those who oppose religion in the public arena in this country. Roosevelt was a Christian and probably 90% of Americans were Christian at that time. In retrospect it might have been more politically correct to also invoke the higher powers of the Muslim, Buddhist, Hindu and other faiths but the point would have been the same and his prayer was in keeping with the values and traditions of the overwhelming majority of the people who elected him.

To say that since not all religions were represented in his prayer means that he shouldn't have said it all is the essence of moonbatism-to strike religion from public discourse, as the ACLU is doing, since not everybody agrees with it.

Can anyone think of a single subject discussed in the public arena that everyone agrees with? And you'll have to admit that since you had to ask what power he was appealing to,it wasn't very obvious,right?

I'm not "lambasting" you my friend, just disagreeing with you on a few points in your comments. By separating your views from those of Michael Moore, you've already convinced me that you are no moonbat.

Bulldog must be of an age that does not remember the times of which he speaks. The civil rights movement began in the church, was fueled, supported and overwhelmingly consisted of Christians. Among it's leaders on the white side of the fence were people like Charleton Heston (past president of the NRA) and it was Republicans who ran the voter registration campaigns to enroll southern blacks and insure their votes were cast and counted.

You would have not found one of today's "moonbats" anywhere near the civil rights movement had you actually been there. You have fallen prey to the revisionist history of the day....and the laziness that accepts such on it's face.

Having resided in places where Christians were minorities I felt no "discrimination" at others publically praying in the names of their religions. The problem in not that others are discriminated against, it is that so many are so self absorbed, so lack self esteem, so personly weak as to be threatened by the public displays of faith by others.

The fact is that Christianity is the only major religion that in it's core doctrines acknowledges that every man must choose for himself and is responsible only to God for his choice, and that every man has the right to reject as clearly as accept. The religious freedom for which this country is the light to the world stems from this very fact, it is the very reason this is a religious "melting pot" as well as cultural. You find any country in the world where there is true religious freedom and you will find those freedoms spring from Christian roots.
